Deireadh Seachtaine Gaeltachta

Gaeltacht Cultural Weekend (Carna, 2-4 November 2018)

[Leagan Gaeilge thíos – Irish version below]

Your Gaeltacht weekend will be spent in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht at NUI Galway’s Irish language Outreach Centre (Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim, Carna). The Gaeltacht is the term used to describe those areas of Ireland where Irish is the everyday language spoken by a majority of people in the community. Carna and its surrounding region is renowned for the richness of its traditional culture and beautiful landscape. Your weekend programme will both improve your Irish language skills and deliver an authentic cultural experience. In addition to the language tuition you will visit sites of cultural and historic importance in the beautiful Connemara landscape. Other highlights will include sean-nós (old style) singing and dancing workshops, and traditional music sessions with acclaimed artists from the region.

Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim

Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim forms an integral part of NUI Galway’s network of Gaeltacht Centres. Its primary aim is to deliver excellent Irish language enrichment and acquisition programmes to University students from Ireland and abroad. Established in 1998, the centre  is named in honour of Sorcha Ní Ghuairim (1911-1977), a Carna native who made a significant contribution to the progression of the Irish language and traditional culture. Amongst her achievements were prominent positions as university lecturer with Irish at Trinity College Dublin, editor of the national newspaper An tÉireannach and Irish Language Editor of the Irish Press newspaper (Scéala Éireann). Sorcha Ní Ghuairim was also a fine exponent of sean-nós singing. The Centre curates a treasure-house of archives including the renowned Joe Heaney Archive (www.joeheaney.org). Joe Heaney (1919 – 1984), considered by many to be one of the finest Irish sean-nós singers of all, was born in Carna and travelled extensively teaching sean-nós and sharing his vast repertoire of songs with communities from Seattle to Sydney. You will be given an insight into the richness of these archives allowing you to further explore topics relating to the Irish Language and its associated culture.

Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim

Cuid lárnach de ghréasán na nIonad Gaeltachta atá ag Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh é Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim. Bunaíodh an tIonad i 1998 agus ainmníodh é in omós do Shorcha Ní Ghuairim (1911-1977), bean áitiúil a chaith a saol ag iarraidh an Ghaeilge agus cultúr na Gaeltachta a chur chun cinn. I measc na n-éachtaí a bhain Sorcha amach  bhí  rólanna suntasacha aici mar léachtóir ollscoile le Gaeilge i gColáiste na Tríonóide, mar eagarthóir leis an nuachtán náisiúnta an tÉireananch agus mar Eagarthóir Gaeilge le Scéala Éireann. Amhránaí sean-nóis den scoth ab ea Sorcha freisin. Tá stórchiste luachmhar de chartlanna faoi choimeád san Áras. Ina measc seo tá cartlann Sheosaimh Uí Éanaí nó Joe Éinniú (www.joeheaney.org). Rugadh agus tógadh Joe Éinniú (1919 – 1984) i gCarna agus áirítear é ar dhuine de na hamhránaithe sean-nóis ab fhearr a bhí ann riamh. Thaisteal Joe an domhan mór, ó Seattle go Sydney, ag múineadh an tsean-nóis agus ag amhránaíocht ag féilte agus ag ceolchoirmeacha. Gheobhaidh tú léargas ar shaibhreas na gcartlanna seo a chuirfidh ar do chumas tuilleadh fiosraithe a dhéanamh faoin nGaeilge agus faoin gcultúr dúchasach a bhaineann léi.
